America’s reading scores

America’s reading scores
Are plummeting
Act now to boost your child’s reading skills before it’s too late
With a five-point decrease in reading scores from 2019-2024, The Nation’s Report Card reveals an alarming trend among American children.

When students don’t master the foundations of reading in the early years, the gap widens quickly – academically, socially and emotionally. Well-designed early learning programs can dramatically reduce the number of students who later require remediation.
Katy Pike, Creator of Reading Eggs

The foundations of reading start by age 4, that’s why Reading Eggs targets early literacy skills, focusing on the five foundational pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.
We build your child’s early reading skills in the right order, which means starting with phonemic awareness first, and progressing to more advanced skills like comprehension and fluency. This ensures that each skill is solid before moving onto the next. This is how strong readers are built.
Based on years of solid scientific research, Reading Eggs created a highly structured program that breaks down early reading skills into small, manageable lessons with clear, step-by-step guidance, modelling and immediate feedback.
This approach ensures that learning is not left to chance, and students master each new literacy skill before moving on to the next. Children are given quizzes at the end of each lesson to ensure they understand each new skill, and you can see their results in real-time.

Children love the fun rewards and exciting learning games that make learning feel like play. Our multi-layered reward system consists of golden eggs, collectable pets, and games to give your child consistent motivation to complete their lessons while gaining essential literacy skills.

The Nation’s Report Card was administered by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 2024. Designed to assess reading samples of fourth-and-eighth-grade students in the United States across 26 large urban school districts, the report shows that average, reading scores have declined significantly in the last five years.

Loss of foundational skills
Reading is the foundation of learning: Students must know how to read in order to progress in all other areas of school.

Long term impacts
Lower reading scores can translate to weaker high school outcomes, less opportunities for college, reduced workforce readiness and fewer economic opportunities.

School is not enough anymore
A five point drop over just five years is significant. This suggests that families will need to seek supplementary education to support their children's learning and turn these statistics around.
