Where children learn to read!

Phonics Games Online

The internet abounds with literacy activities for kids, with a wide variety of phonics games online. These games offer a great resource for parents and teachers to supplement the reading instruction that kids are already receiving at school. Playing phonics games online can help your child learn how words are made up of individual sounds, known as phonemes. This will help develop their phonemic awareness – a fundamental skill for all reading beginners.

It’s important that skills gained from phonics games online are also developed within a wider learning framework where they can be applied, reinforced, and understood in a myriad of contexts. It is therefore a very effective learning strategy to couple phonics games with the reading of actual books, so that your child can apply their phonics skills to practical reading, as well as discover new words – words that they can learn to read by identifying its constituent letters and sounds – a key skill learnt from phonics games online.

Phonics games online are therefore a fantastic resource to build the most basic skills of an early reader. Not only do they develop a child’s phonemic awareness, but they are fun and easy to play. Kids learn most effectively when having fun, so playing phonics games online that feature colourful animations, characters, sounds and songs, are a great way to keep them interested and keen to learn more.

Things to keep in mind when choosing online phonics activities

While phonics instruction is essential for kids learning to read, it is only one of the five interrelated core literacy areas that contribute to early reading development, the others being phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Any emphasis placed over and above one of these areas will detract from the whole. So while phonics games online may capture the interest of your child, it’s important that they don't monopolise their complete focus, and that they learn phonics interdependently with the other aforementioned literacy areas.

ABC Reading Eggs offers a complete reading program that uses a wide variety of effective, research-based learning activities within a framework of lessons and rewards that keep young readers motivated and enthusiastic about learning how to read. Reading Eggs teaches all five of the key literacy skill to young readers, and helps kids excel at reading. Reading Eggs offers a synthetic phonics approach for young readers, framed within a larger literacy program that builds all the fundamental literacy necessary for your child to become a fluent reader.

This program is Brilliant!!! It keeps my students motivated (hard to do with special needs students) and allows them to achieve success immediately. I would thoroughly recommend this program to all Primary School teachers. Andrew Johnson, South Bunbury Education Support Centre

My daughter loves Reading Eggs! She is so excited by the progress she has made through the site. She enjoys the games and is learning so much. I highly recommend it. It is great for learning phonics and letter sounds. The games are fun and educational. We will continue to use Reading Eggs until she is reading on her own! Alycia A
